Ripstop fabric is a favorite in both fashion and function-focused industries. Known for its lightweight strength and tear-resistant properties, ripstop has become a go-to choice for everything from military gear to casual outdoor wear.

In this article, we’ll break down how ripstop is made, some of its unique benefits, and where it is most commonly used. Whether you’re designing outerwear, bags, or uniforms, understanding ripstop’s construction will help you choose the right material for your project.

What Is Ripstop Fabric?

Ripstop fabric gets its name from its structure: a special reinforcing technique that helps prevent tears from spreading. It’s usually woven with a thinner base thread —often nylon or polyester—and is interwoven with thicker threads at regular intervals, typically in a crosshatch pattern. These reinforcement threads form a grid of small squares.

This structure gives ripstop its signature strength without adding unnecessary weight. It was actually originally developed during World War II to replace silk parachutes, and the same principle still makes ripstop a durable, lightweight solution today.

Why You Should Choose Ripstop?

Ripstop’s properties make it especially appealing for applications where both durability and weight matter:

  • Tear Resistance: The reinforced weave stops rips from expanding once they start.
  • Lightweight: Despite its strength, ripstop remains surprisingly light, making it ideal for performance apparel and gear.
  • Water and Wind Resistance: Many ripstop fabrics are treated for water repellency or made with tightly woven fibers that resist wind.
  • Versatility: Available in various weights and finishes, ripstop can be used for everything from jackets to tents to linings.

Common Uses for Ripstop Fabric

You’ll find ripstop fabric used across industries and applications, including:

  • Outdoor apparel (jackets, windbreakers)
  • Military and tactical gear
  • Backpacks and luggage
  • Sportswear and uniforms
  • Industrial and utility wear

Here are five great ripstop options available on our site.

218 – Cordura Ripstop
This sheer nylon ripstop is made of 66 nylon Cordura thread and has a silicone coating on the surface, making it highly water-resistant and stain-resistant.

1060140 – COOLDOTS Mini Ripstop
This is a really strong fabric. Made from tear- and abrasion-resistant CORDURA® nylon and Honeywell’s lightweight, cut-resistant Spectra® fiber arranged in a grid pattern. Spectra thread is a high molecular weight polyethylene fiber that has 15 times the tensile strength of steel!

10210 – Ripstop
This is a cotton ripstop fabric with nylon thread reinforcement thread. Perfect for a canvas look/feel with added strength.

281 – Tsunooga® Ripstop
Tsunooga® is a Toyobo super fiber (high-strength polyethylene) with excellent strength and elasticity. It also has a light specific gravity.
It is especially resistant to tearing, and compared to the 210 nylon oxford of the same standard, Tsunooga® Rip is about 1.6 times stronger.

TM860W – Masdack® Ripstop Tetoron High Density Ripstop
This is an ultra-high density ripstop fabric that is breathable and water repellent.
