Part 3 of “Basics of Fiber, Yarn, and Fabric”
Woven fabrics are created by interlacing two sets of yarns—warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise)—at right angles.
The way these yarns intersect determines the look, durability, and hand of the fabric.
Core Weave Types
| Weave | Structure & Appearance | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Plain | Each weft passes over one warp and under the next; balanced, simple | Poplin, broadcloth, muslin |
| Twill | Diagonal ribs from weft passing over 2+ warps; strong, drapey | Denim, chino, gabardine |
| Satin | Long floats of warp or weft for smooth, lustrous face | Eveningwear, linings |
| Pile | Extra warp or weft forms loops or cut surface | Velvet, corduroy, terry |
| Jacquard | Complex patterns woven using jacquard loom | Brocade, damask, tapestry |
| Dobby | Small geometric patterns created with a dobby attachment | Piqué, bird’s-eye |
Thread Count
Measured as the number of warp plus weft yarns per square inch (e.g., 200TC).
- Higher thread count = smoother, denser, more durable.
- Balance between warp and weft counts affects drape and strength.
Fabric Grain
- Straight/Lengthwise Grain: Parallel to warp; least stretch.
- Crosswise Grain: Perpendicular to warp; slight give.
- Bias: 45° angle; maximum stretch and drape—important for pattern cutting.
Representative Woven Fabrics
Here are common fabrics that showcase different weave techniques and finishing approaches:
| Fabric | Construction Highlights | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn | Fine, high-thread-count plain weave; crisp but soft | Blouses, dresses |
| Chambray | Plain weave with colored warp & white weft | Shirts, casual wear |
| Seersucker | Slack-tension plain weave creating puckers | Summer shirts, dresses |
| Poplin/Broadcloth | Plain weave with fine rib effect | Shirting, light jackets |
| Oxford | Basket variation of plain weave | Dress shirts |
| Denim | 3/1 twill with dyed warp/white weft | Jeans, workwear |
| Gabardine | Steep, tightly woven twill | Tailored suiting |
| Satin/Sateen | Warp- or weft-faced satin | Formalwear, linings |
| Velvet/Corduroy/Terry | Pile constructions | Outerwear, upholstery |
