This is Kayaba from ApparelX Insight. Today, I would like to introduce buffalo buttons.

About Horn Button

These buttons are made from the horns or bones of Indian and Dutch buffalo.

Many of them are imported from India and Southeast Asia. While they are particularly popular for custom-made men’s suits, they are also widely used for both men’s and women’s coats and suits.

They are also known as buffalo buttons, genuine buffalo buttons, or real horn buttons, but they all refer to the same thing.

Since they are made from natural materials, each button has a unique pattern. Even with the same product number and color code, the colors and patterns may vary slightly, making each button one of a kind. This uniqueness adds to their special appeal.

Choosing how to arrange them can be a true test of craftsmanship.

Occasionally, we receive inquiries such as, “The pattern looks different from the sample…” However, this is precisely the charm of natural materials, and we appreciate your understanding.

Types of Buffalo Buttons

Buffalo buttons are made by slicing or hollowing out buffalo horns. The horns are processed to a uniform thickness, then cut into button shapes, polished, and drilled for buttonholes. There are two types: “Tatsu” and “Ita.”

Tatsu

This type is made by slicing the tip of the buffalo horn into circular pieces and cutting out button shapes. It is characterized by beautiful streak patterns.

Ita

This type is made by opening the hollow part of the horn and flattening it into a sheet before cutting out button shapes. It features brushstroke-like streak patterns.

Colors

Buffalo buttons come in colors such as black, dark brown, beige, and ivory. These colors are not dyed but naturally vary depending on the buffalo species and the part of the horn used. The price also varies accordingly. Lighter colors are rarer than black and, therefore, more expensive.

Buffalo-Style Buttons

Buffalo buttons have gained popularity overseas, leading to a significant price increase. If you want to use them but find the cost too high, buffalo-style buttons are a great alternative.

These buttons are made from polyester or urea resin, but they are designed with intentional pattern variations to mimic the natural look of genuine buffalo buttons.

Buffalo-style buttons tend to have a smoother, glossier appearance. However, some are so well-made that it can be difficult to distinguish them from the real thing.

Their biggest advantage is that they are more affordable and easier to obtain compared to genuine buffalo buttons.

Urea Resin Buffalo-Style Buttons

Urea refers to urea resin, a synthetic resin produced by the reaction of urea and formaldehyde.

Since it cannot be dyed after molding, the coloring is done during the raw material stage. Because formalin is used in the process, urea resin buttons contain formaldehyde. Therefore, they should not be used for clothing intended for infants under the age of two.

Bio-Urea

Bio-urea is a sustainable material made from environmentally friendly biomass resources.

It is produced using raw materials such as wood pulp and sugarcane bagasse. A portion of the urea resin is replaced with plant-derived components, making it a more eco-friendly option.

Conclusion

Even if you use high-quality fabric, pairing it with cheap-looking buttons can ruin the overall look.

Choosing genuine buffalo buttons is perfect for those who value authenticity, while buffalo-style buttons offer a wider range of colors and easier availability.

Both options exude a sense of luxury and help create the impression of a well-crafted, high-end garment.
