Hello! This is Kayaba from ApparelX Insight.
Today, I’d like to introduce and explain glossy fabrics!
Satin
Many people mistakenly believe that satin is a type of material, but it actually refers to a weaving technique called satin weave ( in japanese “Shyusuori”).
Satin fabrics can be made from various materials, including silk, cupro, polyester, cotton, and acetate.
With its strong sheen and luxurious feel, satin is often associated with party dresses. It has a smooth, silky texture that exudes elegance, making it a popular choice. However, it is a delicate fabric that is prone to friction damage and scratches, requiring careful handling.
Due to its delicate nature, satin is more commonly used for formalwear, neckties, ribbons, and other accessories, rather than everyday clothing.
While satin has low absorbency and moisture retention, choosing satin made from absorbent materials like cotton or cupro can help mitigate this drawback.

Satin Weave
Satin weave is one of the three fundamental weaving structures, characterized by long floating warp or weft threads.
To reduce the number of intersections between threads, the weave is designed so that the warp and weft do not intersect at adjacent points, creating a smooth and lustrous surface.
- Warp-faced satin ( in japanese “tate-shusu”): The warp threads float over the fabric surface.
- Weft-faced satin (in japanese “yoko-shusu”): The weft threads float over the fabric surface.
Since only one set of threads (warp or weft) is predominantly visible, satin fabrics have a sleek, glossy finish. The fewer the intersections, the smoother the surface and the greater the shine, making satin weaves glossier than plain or twill weaves.
Shantung
Shantung is a plain-woven fabric that uses warp and weft threads of different thicknesses, creating a textured look similar to Tsumugi silk. It has a unique slubbed texture that appears irregularly in the horizontal direction of the fabric.
Originally made from silk, modern shantung fabrics are often woven with synthetic fibers. The slubs are created using slub yarns, adding to its distinct character.
Shantung is known for its firm structure, moderate sheen, and elegant yet soft appearance. It is commonly used for wedding dresses, jackets, skirts, and boleros, as well as home décor items like curtains and tablecloths.
The horizontal slubbed texture (neps) is a defining characteristic of shantung, giving it a sophisticated yet natural look.
While both satin and shantung have a glossy finish, they differ in weave structure—shantung is plain-woven, whereas satin is satin-woven.
Back Satin Shantung
Also known as Reverse Satin Weave, this fabric has a matte surface on the front and a high-gloss satin weave on the back.
Compared to regular satin, it has more structure and firmness, making it easier to handle.
With the elegance of satin weave on one side and a more subdued, sophisticated look on the other, this fabric is versatile and can be used on either side depending on your preference and intended application.

Conclusion
Shantung is a plain-woven fabric with a unique, slubbed texture that gives it a Tsumugi-like appearance.
Satin, on the other hand, is not a material name but refers to a satin-woven fabric.
Understanding these differences can help you make better choices when selecting fabrics!
