While velvet, velveteen, and velour are similar, there are unique differences in characteristics. Kumoi Beauty is a fabric manufacturer with a key focus on velveteen and corduroy so we’ll be introducing the manufacturer and some of their fabrics as we go through the differences of velvet, velveteen, and velour.
Kumoi Beauty
Since its founding in 1949, the company has been a textile manufacturer that designs, manufactures and sells corduroy and velveteen fabrics produced in the Enshu region in western Shizuoka Prefecture. The quality of its products is the result of techniques handed down over many years. Carefully and proudly made in Japan, the fabrics are high quality and made with high attention to detail. The key point is the quality of the material, which can only be brought out by traditional manufacturing methods. Access all Kumoi Beauty fabrics on ApparelX here.
Kumoi Beauty is always updating their fabrics and offers more than corduroy and velvet, like denim and canvas, and has fabrics made from japanese washi paper, bamboo, supima cotton, and indigo dyes!
Velvet, Velveteen, and Velour… what’s the difference?
All three are piled, textured fabrics that give off a luxurious feel. With their dense, soft feel, they add warmth to any outfit or home and do well in colder months.
Velvet is a high pile, high shine/gloss and drapey woven fabric. Made from silk, viscose, rayon etc., they are best for elegant evening wear and upholstery.
Velveteen is also woven but is made from cotton and has a short pile with less shine. It also differs from velvet with having little to no drape and is best used for upholstery and home decor. It can be seen as being similar to suede.
Velour is similar to velvet but is a knit fabric. As a knit fabric, it has stretch and give that traditional velvet does not have. Often made from polyester and being machine washable, it is more common and practical for everyday fashion use like tracksuits and tops. With a dull sheen, it isn’t as glossy as velvet but is a little more glossy than velveteen.
